A Senior Magistrate’s Court, sitting at Karu, Federal Capital
Territory yesterday arraigned three persons, Abdulazzeez Jimoh, Adesina
Emmanuel and Collins Egwu for criminal conspiracy and theft of a car,
which is contrary to sections 97 and 289 of the Penal Code Laws of
Nigeria.
The Investigation Police Officer (IPO), Inspector Usman Idakwo, who
testified in the case, alleged that the accused persons stole a Toyota
Hilux Car, belonging to one Samir Archkor, a Lebanese national on
September, 11, 2012.
Idakwo said that the complainant drove the car into Setraco Yard at
Life Camp Abuja and packed it in front of the company’s restaurant. A
few hours later, he came out and discovered that the car had
disappeared.
Police swung into action following complaint by the plaintiff. In the
course of the investigation, the accused persons were arrested on
September, 13, 2012 at different places.
The accused persons allegedly made a confessional statement, during
police interrogations. However, they were not given the opportunity to
respond to the allegations of the IPO because their counsel asked the
court for a date for a defence.
According to the confessional statement of the accused persons, the
stolen car was sold to someone simply identified as Alhaji from Sokoto
State. The accused persons in their statement before the court also said
the buyer of the stolen car was their regular customer who often comes
to buy stolen items from them.
Meanwhile, the Police said the buyer is still at large, but efforts
were on to catch him. The court granted the defence counsel’s prayer and
adjourned the case to December, 9, 2014.
