Boko Haram: Senate raises N20m for internally displaced persons

SENATORS resolved on Tuesday to raise the sum N20 million in support of people who have been displaced from their homes, as a result of Boko Haram insurgency in the North-East.
While adopting a motion of urgent national importance, raised by the Deputy Senate Leader, Abdul Ningi, the Senate resolved to contribute the sum to assist the affected Nigerians.
The lawmakers also urged the Federal Government to double efforts in providing relief materials to the affected people and also solicit assistance of international agencies where necessary.
Senator Ningi, while leading debate on the situation of internally displaced persons in the North-East, told his colleagues that insurgency had become a circle capable of revolving round the country if not immediately checked.

Senate Leader, Victor Ndoma-Egba, in his contribution, said the issue of Boko Haram insurgents had placed many Nigerians between the the devil and the deep blue sea.
According to him, it was regrettable that while Boko Haram members were harassing the people on one hand, the consequences, which include large number of internally displaced persons, was putting the nation’s economy at risk.
He, therefore, asked the Nigerian government and international agencies to act fast.
Senate President, David Mark, who rounded off the debate, said the government must worry about refugees which, he stated, was integral part of plans made in a state of war.http://www.tribune.com.ng/news/news-headlines/item/19972-boko-haram-senate-raises-n20m-for-internally-displaced-persons
