Abandoned BRT project lanes increases road accidents

Abandoned BRT project lanes increases road accidents
Road crashes have drastically jerked up in and around Effurun, Delta State, following the abandonment of the Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) project by the State government.
The BRT lanes, unlike in Lagos, is in the middle of the ever busy federal road which connects Effurun Roundabout to the Nigerian Ports Authority Complex in Warri.
Since the project started last year, plants and other heavy equipment, including raw materials, heaps of granite and sand are left haphazardly on the road. Vehicles and tricycles crash into these objects on a daily basis, especially at night.

In April this year, five persons, including a child, a baby and their mother lost their lives when one of the bulldozers being used in the construction, rammed into a tricycle.
The two-lanes, which was carved out of part of the Benin – Warri Expressway and took the federal government over 20 years to complete, had been made too narrow for convenient driving at night.
With the construction, no auxiliary roads were provided to assuage the daily melee that has become a permanent feature on the about three-kilometer stretch of road. Enerhen Police Division confirmed that accidents occurred almost every day now.
The source however refused to give specific numbers of such accidents recorded every day. Ugborikoko Police Division on the other hand, promised to look at the records to get the figures but was not forthcoming as at the time of filing this report.
Attempt made to get the works commissioner, Funkekeme Solomon, was abortive, as his phone said: “Sorry, this number cannot receive calls at the moment, please try again later.”
