Five men gang-rape eight-yearold girl

Three men yesterday escaped lynching in Owerri, Imo State by a whisker when irate traders descended on them for allegedly violating an eight-year-old girl.

Five men had allegedly lured the girl, a sachet water hawker, to an uncompleted building around the popular Relief Market in Owerri, where they forcibly had carnal knowledge of her.
The five men were taking turn to defile the girl when her muffled cries attracted a passer-by who raised the alarm.
Angry traders stormed to the building and apprehended three of the men while two others fled. Within a few minutes, mob had gathered and stripped the suspects naked. The traders beat the suspects to stupor which they alleged was for a ritual purpose.
While the mob was preparing to burn the suspects, a patrol van loaded with armed policemen arrived the scene and rescued the suspected rapists who were already too battered to stand. They were consequently bundled into the patrol van and driven to the state police headquarters.
When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Andrew Enwerem, said the command received a tip on the incident and dispatched a patrol team to intervene and forestall the breakdown of law and order. He, however, said the victim was 12 years’ old.
Enwerem promised that the police would get to the root of the matter. He added that policemen were already on the trail of the two suspects still at large.
