Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Fatai Owoseni, said he was
worried by the increasing cases of murder in the state.
The commissioner
said while some violent cases appeared to be going down, murder cases
were on the increase.
He said: “In a week, we record at least five murder cases. And some
of these cases make you wonder what is happening in the society.”
Narrating some of the most trivial of incidents that led to murder,
Owoseni said: “There was the case of twin brothers. One killed the other
over a minor scuffle.
There was also the case of the man who drugged and slaughtered his
wife. There was another case of two brothers, who while fighting over
torch, killed each other.” The commissioner urged Nigerians to go back
to the traditional method of resolving conflicts, rather than attempting
to resolve such issues through killings. Owoseni was particularly
worried about youths in different parts of Lagos, who resort to violence
over levy collections on the road. According to him, such youths used
to disturb public peace.
To check such violence, the police, he disclosed, had started
engaging community leaders, youth leaders and political leaders in some
areas in Lagos. The meeting, according to him, is for them to fashion
out proper ways the group could be collecting levies.
He said: “At Arashibiri, Ajangbadi area, some youths went the rampage
for two days over levies, instilling fears into people. In the process,
one person was killed. Seven suspects have been arrested. The principal
suspect, who killed, has been arrested. A locallymade pistol, believed
to be weapon used in the killing, has been recovered.”
