The Lagos State
Commissioner of Police, Mr. Fatai Owoseni, yesterday ordered the immediate
release of a mother and child, who had been detained three days at Agbowa area
of the state for stealing plantain.
The unidentified woman
was accused of stealing the plantain by a woman in one of the market in the
area on Saturday.
It was gathered that the
woman and her child would have been lynched for stealing for the plantain, but
for the timely intervention of some traders.
The woman and her baby
were later handed over to the policemen from Agbowa Police Station for proper.
Owoseni, who paid an
unscheduled visit to Agbowa Police Station, ordered for the immediate release
of the woman and her child.
The lady, during
interrogation by Owoseni, disclosed that she was pushed into stealing the
plantain because she and her baby were hungry.
Owoseni, moved with
compassion, gave mother and child N10, 000. He warned her never to repeat the
act again and to take proper care of herself and the baby.
Mr. Akinloye Adelusi
said: “If not for the quick intervention of the commissioner of police, the
woman and her child would have remained in police custody for weeks. It’s
clear she wouldn’t have been able to pay for the plantain to set herself free.
She may even had ended up in court and remanded in prison.”
