Intelligence gathering, panacea to crime fighting- Security expert

The Managing Director of Strict Guards Security Company Limited, Dr. Bone Efoziem, has urged security agencies in the country to embrace intelligence and put a stop to insecurity challenges, confronting Nigeria.

Efoziem said this yesterday in Lagos, during the Crime Reporters Association of Nigeria (CRAN), annual lecture series and award with a theme:  ‘Solving security challenges through intelligence.’

He said: “Sharing of information among the security agencies would go a long way in tackling and solving security challenges facing us as a nation. The militants in Niger Delta started as agitation group but later grew into militants, which everybody is paying dearly  for today. But if there is good intelligence gathering, the crisis in the region would have been a thing of the past.”
According to him, to solve the issue of the Boko Haram and other crimes, security agencies should share information and come to gather to battle the common enemy.
The Assistant-Inspector General of Police (AIG), in charge of Zone 2, Onikan, Mr. Kayode Aderanti, said that information sharing among security agencies was very important in the fight against crime and criminalities.

Aderanti said: “There are officers in the Nigeria Police Force, who are always on the internet, gathering information about the activities of criminal elements in the country. There also some who analyze the reports gathered. The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, has placed high premium on the sharing of information and intelligence gathering among security agencies. We cannot do it alone. We need cooperation of sister agencies.”
The Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdurasheed Akanbi Telu 1 called on parents to educate their children and wards on dangers associated with secret cults.

His words “Leaders should come together and unite to fight against cultism. Many youths, who are supposed to be presidents, governors and ministers have been cut down in their prime because of cultism. If I was once into secret group, I wouldn’t be able to campaign in the public against them as a monarch. We have to lead by example and the only to do that, is through advocacy that everybody should move away from it.”
Akanbi Telu 1further said: “Even in my community in Iwo, I have issued an order that none of the youths should engage in cultism. If you are into cultism, renounce it and become a better person.”
The Commander Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Mr. Olatunji Disu, an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), who was one of the award recipients, said the award given to him will spur him to do more.
He said: “I feel good and happy with the award, because police work is a thankless one. And for the Crime Writers to find me worthy of the award is a great joy. The award will also boost our moral and every officer in the Lagos State Police Command would do more to maintain peace and protect the residents, especially in the forthcoming Christmas and New Year celebration.”

Also the Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom was conferred with the award of best crime fighting Governor in Nigeria.
He was among 75 individuals, groups and corporate bodies which received similar awards in several categories at the ceremony which was held at the Sheba Event Center, Ikeja, Lagos.
President of the association, Mr Odita Sunday, stated that the recipients were chosen after careful evaluation of their contributions to the fight against crime in Nigeria and their localities in particular.
He stated that Governor Ortom's carrot and stick amnesty program had contributed immensely in mopping up illegal weapons in Benue while his involvement of all the conventional security apparatus in combined onslaught against criminals was exemplary.
The organizers stated that the non-interference of the Governor in criminal investigation of government officials was unprecedented in the annals of Nigerian history.
According to them, his recommendation of ranching as a permanent solution to the herders, farmers’ incessant clashes was a major contribution to peace efforts in the country just like his engagement with Taraba and Nasarawa counterparts.
Special Adviser on Media and ICT, Mr Tahav Agerzua, who represented Governor Ortom at the ceremony, received the award on his behalf.
