Man commits suicide after fiancée dumps him

Tragedy struck at the Onikolobo area of Abeokuta, Ogun State on Saturday when a 33-year-old man, Oluwatosin Otaiku, stabbed himself to death after his fiancee, Olaogun Oluwatoyin, discontinued the relationship.

PUNCH Metro gathered that Otaiku killed himself after his woman told him she was no longer interested in the relationship.

Boko Haram: Confab delegate receives attack notice

A revelation by a member of the National Conference that he had received a threat message from terrorists caused a scare at the confab on Monday.

The delegate, Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN), told the conference that he received a message on his telephone threatening an “attack bigger than Nyanya blast” and sought the permission of the Chairman of the confab, Justice Idris Kutigi (retd.), to read the message.

Kutigi granted the permission and Ozekhome accordingly read the text.

The message, which Ozekhome also forwarded to our correspondent later, read, “News got to us that our enemy is planning something bigger than Nyanya blast between Tuesday and Wednesday, in Abuja. Mind your movement and be careful. The date is still unknown. Please, pass it around to save loved ones.”

Abuja hotels to submit daily list of guests to SSS, police

MINISTER of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Senator Bala Mohammed, on Monday, directed all hotels in Abuja to, henceforth, forward the list of their guests to the FCT Directorate of State Security Services (SSS) and the FCT police command on a daily basis.

The hotels were equally required to install security cameras within their vicinity and ensure thorough check of all vehicles entering their premises and within their surroundings.

The minister, according to his special assistant on media, Nosike Ogbuenyi, also directed all residents and associations in various parts of the territory to embark on “operation know your neighbour” campaign, to ensure all criminally-minded elements were detected easily within the FCT.

Gunmen attack police station in Borno, cart away 60 cows in village

GUNMEN suspected to be members of the Boko Haram sect, attacked and razed the police station in Shani, the headquarters of Shani Local Government Area of Borno State and made away with a patrol vehicle of the station.

 A resident of Shani disclosed this to the Nigerian Tribune on phone, adding that the gunmen came on motorcycles.

 This is the first time Shani town would be attacked by Boko Haram terrorists since the crises of Boko Haram insurgency in 2009.

Police uncover kidnappers’ den in Ilorin

Kwara State police command, on Saturday, discovered an abandoned complex of buildings on Lagos-Ilorin Expressway, in the Ilorin International Airport area, suspected to be a hideout for criminals, dealing in human parts and other nefarious criminal activities.

Nigerian Tribune gathered that some of the items allegedly discovered in the six buildings of about 18 flats, said to be owned by an 85 year-old socialite, include decomposed human bodies, a decomposing headless body, decomposed human feet, snail shells, piece of cloth suspected to be used in strangulating victims, bra, National Youth Service Corps’ (NYSC) cap, shoes, Jalamia, cap, eye glasses, hand set cover, sandals, among other personal belongings.

Court frees Funsho Williams’ suspected killers

AFTER eight years of imprisonment, six persons accused of killing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) gubernatorial aspirant, Mr Funsho Williams, were, on Monday, set free by a Lagos High Court sitting in Igbosere.

Bulama Kolo, Musa Maina, David Cassidy, Tunani Sonoma, Mustapha Kayode and Ikponmwose Imariabie regained freedom after Justice Ebenezer Adebajo held that the evidence adduced by the prosecution to prove the two-count charge of conspiracy and murder against them was “weak and superficial.”

The defendants, it will be recalled, had told the court on June 9 that the prosecution had not made out a prima facie case to warrant calling them to defend themselves.

A prima facie case is made out in a criminal trial where the evidence presented is sufficient to secure a conviction, unless it is successfully rebutted by the defence.

In a no-case-to-answer submission, dated May 20, the defence counsel, Okezie Agbara, had told Justice Adebajo that the case against his clients must collapse because it was built on unfounded suspicion. 

Mastermind of Chibok abduction nabbed —Army

DIRECTOR, Defence Information, Major-General Chris Olukolade, on Monday, disclosed that the mastermind of the abduction of schoolgirls in Government Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State and head of a terrorists’ intelligence cell, Babuji Ya’ari, has been nabbed by the Nigerian Army.

According to the release, Babuji, who disguises as a member of youth vigilance group, known as Civilian JTF, participated actively in the abduction of schoolgirls in Chibok and spearheaded the murder of the Emir of Gwoza.

Babuji, whose main role in the Civilian JTF is to spy and gather information for the terrorist group, has also been at the forefront of several deadly attacks in Maiduguri since 2011, including the daring attacks on customs and military locations, as well as the planting of improvised explosive devices in several locations in the town.
