5 Die In Niger Tanker Fire

No fewer than five people have been killed in Mokwa local government area of Niger State as a tanker rammed into 10 stationed vehicles in the local government headquarters.
LEADERSHIP gathered that the accident occurred at the weekend when the vehicle coming from Jebba area suddenly lost control after the local government secretariat in Mokwa popularly called “Saw Mill area”.
It was gathered that the vehicle, after ramming into the stationed vehicles, suddenly caught fire as it was conveying a petroleum product. It set ablaze all the residential houses and shops along the ever-busy area.
An eyewitness told LEADERSHIP that the shops, mainly used to sell foodstuff, were burnt to ashes as were the 10 vehicles.
The eyewitness also stated that because there were no fire fighters around the area, the residents watched helplessly as people and materials were burnt to ashes.
It was gathered that out of the five bodies two were burnt beyond recognition while others, including the driver of the tanker, were immediately recovered.
When contacted, the secretary of Mokwa local government, Mohammed Goro, confirmed the incident but said it did not affect the secretariat, promising to give the details of the accident later.
