A senior lecturer with the department of Mass Communication, University
of Maiduguri, Malam Murtala Mohammed, was, on Sunday, shot dead by
unknown gunmen suspected to be members of the Boko Haram sect.
The
don was shot dead at about 5.00 p.m while on inspection of his ongoing
building project around 202 Housing Estate in Maiduguri, the Borno State
capital.
Murtala, said to be undergoing his doctorate degree
course, was said to have died on the spot when the gunmen fired several
bullets at him.
Several attempts to get the sate police commissioner to comment on the incident failed.
Speaking
with the Nigerian Tribune through telephone, some students of the
institution said killing and kidnapping of lecturers was becoming
rampant.
“One of our senior lecturer, Dr Abba Kagu, is still
nowhere to be found. These people are salary earners, they are not
politicians and they do not have the money these gunmen are looking for.
For God’s sake, how can someone just go and shoot a lecturer? Malam
Murtala of all people, who was very kind,” one of the students said.
