PLATEAU State police command has intercepted a cache of arms
and improvised explosives devices (IEDs) set to be detonated at various
strategic places within Jos, the state capital.
The state Commissioner of Police, Chris Olakpe, who disclosed this on Tuesday when when the lawmaker representing Plateau North, Senator Gyang Pwajok, visited him in his office, said the command was able to foil the plan to bomb some parts of the city, following a tip off by some people within the state capital.
He said the command had concluded arrangement to commence a house-to-house search for arms where attacks and counter-attacks had become prevalent, adding that no abode would be spared in the search.
“Just about two weeks ago, we were able to have synergy with information and informants that led to the recovery of a large cache of already assembled and ready to be ignited explosives and so we thank God that we were able to get that.
“We are going to do house-to-house search for arms and ammunition to ask ourselves how we got these sophisticated weapons and through what source. There has to be a stop against arming communities, because too much guns are in the hands of these communities,” he said.
The police commissioner also called on the state and local governments to partner with the police, by providing vehicles and other logistics support to help fight the growing security challenge in some parts of the state.
He attributed the current conflict in some communities outside the state capital to the continuous disagreement between farmers and herdsmen on grazing areas and farmland.
Meanwhile, majority leader in the state House of Assembly and member representing Riyom constituency, Honourable Daniel Dem, has decried the recent killings of two aged people and burning of over 30 houses in a midnight raid at Dakum and Jol villages, in Riyom Local Government Area of the state.
The lawmaker, who expressed sadness with the turn of events in the area, told newsmen that the situation was bad that the villagers had to flee the entire community for their safety.
According to him “we are tired of this kind of events. As I am talking to you now, arrangement is being made to mobilise the mobile police to the area, to beef up security, together with the STF operatives.”
He called on National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the state counterpart to visit the affected villages and supply relief materials, as over a dozen of people were displaced and their homes burnt.
