No fewer than 20 people have been arrested by men of the Lagos State Police
Command, following an attack on some policemen by suspected land speculators.
The attack which occurred at the Imowo Nla area of Ikorodu area of the state, led to the death of a
policeman and injuring of two of his colleagues.
Residents in the area and members of the two warring land speculators were also
said to have sustained varying degrees of injuries.
Two factions of land speculators had last week Tuesday engaged each other in a
bloody clash over control of a large expanse of land in Imowo Nla
The deceased policeman and the injured colleagues were said to have been
ordered to the volatile scene, by the State’s Commissioner of Police, Prince
Umar Manko, to restore peace and order.
But when the land grabbers, who were armed to the teeth, saw them, they had
confronted the cops.
It was
gathered that on arriving at the land speculators' battle field, the hoodlums
did not give the policemen any chance, before opening fire on them.
One of the drafted policemen died instantly and two others escaped with bullet
wounds, forcing the policemen to call for reinforcement
Daily NewsWatch gathered that it took the intervention of the Area Commander in
charge of Area N Ijede, Marcus Omuiyadun and some teams of policemen from the
state headquarters to bring peace to the area.
Police spokesperson, Ngozi Braide, said that 20 people had been arrested in
connection with the incident.
She further said that the suspects would be transferred to the homicide section
of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti Yaba for further
investigations.
