Police blame death of 13 tanker explosion victims on lack of safety culture

The Lagos State Police Command has attributed the yesterday inferno at the Berger Suya area of the state, where about 13 people died after a tanker truck failed brake, crashed and exploded, to lack of maintenance culture by tanker drivers.
In a press release made available to theeagleonline, the Commissioner of Lagos State, Umar Manko, speaking through the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Ngozi Braide said: “This ugly incident could have been averted if commuters and those who deal on petroleum products had maintained high security and safety standard in the course of their business."
Manko advised members of the public, especially owners and drivers of heavy duty vehicles on the need for adequate maintenance and servicing of their vehicle.
According to Braide, yesterday January, 8, 2014, " A tanker fully loaded with PMS product from one of the tank farms at Kirikiri depot was on its way out through Berger axis, while trying to connect Oshodi, had a break failure and in the process, the driver totally lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a road side Suya Spot. Consequently, the tanker fell down and went into flames."
Braide revealed that all Police Divisions within Area ‘B’ Command were quickly mobilized to the scene to avoid looting and breakdown of law, while fire fighters battled eventually put off the fire.
She added: " Sadly, about 10 people were confirmed dead while about fifteen sustained various degrees of burns, including a serving Police Officer who equally responded to the distress situation.
"Meanwhile, the command has beefed up security in that area to forestall any breakdown of law and order."
