28 die in Osun road crashes

28 die in Osun road crashes
At least 28 people died in road traffic crashes in Osun State last month. The state Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Mr Muhammad Husaini, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday in Osogbo.
Husaini said that 241 people were involved in the 29 road traffic crashes that occurred in the state within the month under review.
The sector commander attributed the crashes to over speeding, poor condition of roads and sometimes failure by motorists to comply with road traffic rules and regulations. He said: “Some of the accidents recorded could have been avoided if the drivers were not speeding or driving within the speed limit. “Most of the roads are not in good condition and if drivers were not over speeding, they would have had the advantage of manoeuvring the ditches and potholes on the road and avoiding accidents.’’
Husaini, however, commended the state government for addressing the situation through road reconstruction and rehabilitation. He called on motorists to observe road safety rules, adding that the commission was determined to ensure the safety of lives on the roads. The sector commander also called on commuters to plan their trips ahead, understand the routes they planned to ply, and use alternative routes to avoid traffic jams during the ‘ember’ months.
According to him, the commission has put safety measures in place to protect the lives of road users at all times and that the commission will not relent in its efforts at achieving zero accidents on the roads. He said that anyone caught violating road traffic rules would be apprehended and prosecuted according to the Federal Road Safety Law.
