A 45-year-old woman, Philomena Nwega, has been murdered in Ebonyi State because her son, Friday, allegedly raped another man’s pregnant wife. The suspect, Chinedu Nweke (32), yesterday told journalists that he beheaded the woman as a revenge for her son’s offence. Nweke, who hails from Amuda in Ezza North Local Government Area of the state, was paraded at the police headquarters.
He said Friday’s action also led to the termination of his wife’s pregnancy. Briefing journalists in his office, the state Commissioner of Police, Mr Maigari Dikko, said the people of the community alerted police about the incident, before the suspect was arrested. He said: “On 6th of September, 2014, the suspect, Mr Chinedu Nweke, waylaid and cut off the head of Philomena Nwega, 45-yearold woman from the same village while she was returning from the farm.
“According to the suspect, his motive was that the son of the deceased, Friday Nwega, raped his (suspect’s) wife sometimes ago. After committing the murder, the suspect threw the headless body into Ogbor stream in Amuda and buried the head in a nearby bush.”
Dikko disclosed that the body and head of the deceased had been recovered by the police. Giving details of other breakthroughs, the police chief said that in August, the command arrested about 31 suspects whose offences ranged from armed robbery to possession of illegal arms, cultism and murder.
