Robbers kill soldier, businessmen in Benue
Armed robbers numbering about 10 have shot and killed three people including one Sunday Lukas, a military officer, in 72 Airborne Barracks, located at the North Bank area of Makurdi, the Benue State capital. Lukas was a member of the state Joint Patrol Team popularly called Operation Zenda.
He was killed on Otupko-Makurdi Expressway, while the other two victims identified as Aondoaver Iorapuu and Aondofa Tavaan (businessmen) met their untimely death in Aliade, in Gwer Local Government Area.
It was gathered that on Tuesday, Aondoaver and Aondofa were travelling in a white Toyota bus with registration number MKD463AE when they ran into a roadblock at Mase-Jato village. A source said that when the businessmen suspected the roadblock was mounted by robbers, they turned back and informed the Joint Patrol Team of their discovery.
It was gathered that Lukas, after listening to the two men, followed them to the scene and fired sporadically to scare away the robbers. The source added that the soldiers and the two friends suddenly found themselves between the bandits who had divided themselves into two. The robbers opened fire and killed the three men on the spot.
The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Daniel Ezeala, who confirmed the incident, said the remains of the deceased were deposited at St. Vincent Hospital, Aliade. He explained that the body of Lukas was later conveyed by his colleagues led by Major Mohammed to the 72 Army Barracks, while investigation into the matter was on.
