‘Why I blamed my lover, his mum for my son’s death’

Twenty-two-year-old Miss. Mary Adejumo was a picture of a mother in grief. She appeared to have spent the better part of the day weeping. She answered questions listlessly. Mary’s only child, a two-year-old boy, Jesse Ajakaiye alias Eniola, drowned while in the care of his paternal grandmother.

According to Mary, since she heard the news, time and life seemed to standstill. Every time she goes to bed, she prays to wake up from the nightmare. But every morning she wakes up, with fresh pains assailing her. She fears she might never get used to the boy’s death. Naturally, like any mother in pain, Mary has to blame somebody.
She blamed the child’s grandmother, Juliana Ajakaiye for his death. She said the little boy was taken from her amidst rift. She felt that if the boy had been allowed to stay in her care, he would still be alive. When the boy died, Mary’s world crumbled like a pack of cards. Determined to get justice and find out the true cause of death, Mary alerted the police.
She said: “ My world shattered after I received the ill-fated call from Juliana Ajakaiye, Jesse’s paternal grandmother. She told me about my son’s untimely death. He was found drowned inside a drum filled with water.” Mary said that she remembered the pains, disgrace and humiliation she suffered from the Ajakaiye family after she got pregnant for their son, Dele Ajakaiye.
She alleged that Dele’s family kicked against her relationship with him and tagged her gold digger. When she discovered she was pregnant, Dele allegedly insisted she goes for abortion, but she refused. Dele allegedly threatened her and her family members with death if she kept the pregnancy. Fearful that Dele would carry out his threat, Mary and her family relocated from Aboru, Iyana-Ipaja, to Ijegun, Ikotun, Lagos. She recollected: “ Dele’s family thought I was after their money and property.
All I wanted was for them to accept my unborn child and assist in his upbringing.” She recounted the horrible experiences she and her family passed through, while hiding and nursing the pregnancy. She said: “My family and I moved to Ijegun area of Ikotun, where we lived in a warehouse, before we moved to an uncompleted building. Life was tough for us. I dropped out of Nursing and Midwifery school, to care for my baby.” After she put to bed, she received a surprised phone call from Dele’s family. They attended Jesse’s christening.
