Immigration repatriates 19 Nigerienne, others out of Nigeria

The Nigeria Immigration Service Lagos State Command, yesterday, repatriated 35 immigrants, including 19 citizens of Niger republic out of Nigeria.

The illegal immigrants include 19 Nigerienne, nine Beninoise, three Togolese and four Ghanaians.
It was gathered that the illegal immigrants were among many, grabbed following a raid at the Lekki area of the Lagos metropolis.
 The Comptroller of Immigration Service, Lagos State Command, Mrs. Clara Okojie, said that the command will continue to carry out raids.  She said there was no hiding place for illegal immigrants in Nigeria, but especially in Lagos.
Okojie appealed to Nigerians, to ensure immigrants they offer employment to, have proper documents permitting them to work in Nigeria.
To ensure that those repatriated do not return to the country, Okojie assigned two Deputy Comptroller of Immigration Mr. Yusuf Ahmed Deputy Comptroller of Immigration Human Resources Management and Deputy Comptroller of Immigration ECOWAS to supervise the repatriation.

She further said: “While the ECOWAS protocol allows citizens of members states to move freely among ECOWAS territory, citizens desirous of staying in Nigeria for 90 days as provided by the protocol, should get registered in Nigeria Immigration Service Divisional offices in local government area of residence.”
According to Okojie, failure to get registered, would ultimately lead to arrest and subsequent repatriation back to their countries of origins.
 
The Nigeria Immigration Service, Lagos State Command’s Spokesperson, Mr. Jide Ogungbe, a Deputy Superintendent of Immigration, said: ''After a thorough screening, immigrants with proper registration documents were released. A total of 35 immigrants were found to be without any form of documents. The illegal immigrants include nine Beninoise, three Togolese, four Ghanaians and 19 Nigerienne.”
