A 35-year-old man has been arrested after policemen,
attached to Border Patrol Unit, Ogun State, discovered 620kg of Indian Hemp
concealed inside wands of clothes.
According to a police source, the suspect, Olamilekan
Taiwo was allegedly taking the 62 compressed parcels of Indian hemp, weighing
about 10 kg each, to Togo before his plan was thwarted.
When eagle eyed policemen saw Taiwo and flagged him
down, he told policemen that he had a load of cloths for sale. Acting on
instinct, the policemen embarked on a thorough search of the entire clothes and
discovered that 90 percent of the folded packages were filled with wraps of
Indian hemp.
Taiwo was dragged to the nearest police station. When
it dawned on him that the game was up, he owned up to his crime. He further admitted
to have already moved several of such parcels across the border through Ogun State
undetected.
He explained that he has contacts, both in and
outside the country, who are contractors of the syndicate. He described himself
as a mere errand boy.
A police source further said: “Investigation is ongoing,
to arrest his accomplices, both in and outside the country. It’s no longer
going to be business as usual on our borders. The Inspector-General-of-Police
(IGP), Mr. Ibrahim Idris, had redeployed newly trained officers to assist other
agencies to man the nation’s border. These special officers were sent to other
developed countries like UK and US to under study how best to protect our
borders from criminal activities. Criminals are warned to seek other
alternatives as any attempt to take advantage of our borders will no longer be
tolerated.”
It was gathered that the arrest of the suspect was led by a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), Mr. Victor Badeh.
Badeh said that arrest of Taiwo was one out of
several results, expected in the forthcoming days.
