Cyclist rescued from prison after six months

Uchenna Inya, ABAKALIKI

The Ebonyi State branch of Public Complaints Commission (PCC) has rescued a tricycle operator, Ifeanyi Abani, from prison.

Abani was said to have arrested, arraigned and remanded in prison for six months following his failure to provide original particulars of  the tricycle he was riding.

Abani, who operates the tricycle on hire purchase, was unable to provide the particulars due to non-availability of the owner, Daniel Okoye. It was gathered that Okoye was out of the state during the period Abani was arrested.

The PCC had stepped into the matter after investigating and getting to the root cause of Abani’s imprisonment.
It was after PCC went into the matter that Abani was released. Abani’s impounded tricycle was also released to him without payment of any fine.

The commissioner in charge of the state’s PCC, Prof. Michael Awoke, praised two officers of the Commission, Mr. Patrick Ede and Mr. Jesse Ebirim over the manner they handled the matter and arrived at its logical conclusion.

He charged other staff of the Commission to emulate them. He also called on members of the public to always seek redress at the Commission whenever their rights were trampled upon.

The Director of Investigation, Chief Collins Chima, while commending the staff that handled the matter, encouraged others to do the same.

Abani and the owner of the tricycle, Okoye, were
very appreciative of the good work of the Commission, especially for not collecting a dime from them before, during or after the incident.
