Vigilante member arrested for stabbing teenager to death

Emmanuel Ifeanyi, Aba

A member of the Abia State Vigilante Service, Sunday Ukwu Kalu, 37, has been arrested for killing a 17-year-old boy, Chinemerem Ifeanyi in Aba, Abia State.

The deceased was alleged to have been killed during a minor quarrel with Kalu. The incident, which occurred at about 8: pm along Agu Road, Ndiegoro, Aba, was said to have caused violent crisis, which was brought under control by policemen from Ndiegoro Division.

Eyewitnesses claimed that Ifeanyi was returning from work when he bumped into the suspect and both soon started quarreling.

One of the eyewitnesses, who wish to remain anonymous, disclosed that he overheard Ifeanyi and Kalu arguing over the rightful owner of a phone.

His words: “I overheard Ifeanyi telling Kalu to leave his phone, but Kalu kept struggling to collect it from him. As at then, I never knew Kalu was a member of Bakassi. I thought it was a mere street boys’ argument. It was when I heard a scream that some people and I rushed to the direction of the scream, only to find Ifeanyi in a pool of his own blood. He had been stabbed on the neck and shoulder.  The suspect quickly abandoned the phone and tried to escape. Some persons, who recognised him, put a call across to Cameroun Barracks Police Station. He was arrested.  The unfortunate thing was that we later found the receipt of the phone on Ifeanyi. The receipt bore his name, meaning the phone belonged to him.”

The Abia State Commissioner of Police, Ene Okon, while confirming the incident, said that the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) for further investigations.
