2018: A year of abductions, insurgents attack, soldiers murdered

As the curtain readies to draw on 2018, one cannot help but reflect and ponder on some of the major security issues that shaped the year. TAIWO JIMOH and STANLEY IHEDIGBO take a look at some of these major security challenges that sent shock waves down the spines of Nigerians.

One of the major shocking incidents of 2018 started five days after Val celebration. Precisely on February 19, 2018, at about 5:30pm, 110 schoolgirls of Government Girls' Science and Technical College (GGSTC), Dapchi, located in Bulabulin, Yunusari Local Government Area of Yobe State, were abducted by Islamic State’s West Africa Province (ISWAP), a faction of Boko Haram Sect.

Detectives attached to Lagos State Police Command have arrested Sikiru Tanimowo, 37, for attempting to kidnap a four-year-old boy at Okokomaiko area of the state.  

2019: Invest in security agencies, technology, experts urge govt

Following the bloodbath orchestrated by Boko Haram members and herdsmen in Nigeria, among other security challenges in 2018, security experts have urged the federal government to invest in security agencies and technology, in order to stem the tide of killings. TAIWO JIMOH AND STANLEY IHEDIGBO report.

The security challenges recorded in 2018 caused deep concern and anxiety among stakeholders in Nigeria. Attempting to fashion out a strategy to curtail further bloodbath, these stakeholders said that there should be a deliberate effort by federal government to invest in the security agencies and technology.
