Police extortion: IG nails DSP with marked N100, 000 notes

Abubakar
The Inspector General of Police(IGP), Mr. Mohammed Abubakar has ordered the immediately arrest and transfer to Force Headquarters Abuja, the officer in charge (OC) of the legal department, at the State Criminal Investigations Department (SCID), Panti, Yaba, Lagos State.
The order came after the IG sent some men to give the OC legal, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), marked bills of naira notes, amounting to N100, 000.
The DSP, Mr. Chukwu Abu, from Ebonyi State, troubles was said to have started after he took over a land tussle case and demanded for N500, 000 from one of the parties.
The party had pleaded with Chukwu that they had only N400, 000 but rather than take the N400, 000 and be done with it, he had threatened to send every member in that party to jail.
Chukwu was however unaware that the leader of the party, one Chief Akaka, who had not been visiting SCID with his men, is actually a close friend to the IG.
When those who went to bail their colleagues returned to tell their boss that OC legal insisted that they should come back with N100, 000 balances or there would be trouble, the man had been furious.
He had called the IG, who instructed the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), in charge of works, Mr. Akano to see him.
The IG and DIG rubbed minds together and hatched a plan on how to nail Chukwu.
A team of monitoring unit, led by a Superintendent of Police (SP), was sent from Abuja to execute the plan.
The team had also come with marked naira notes from the IG. When the team got to Lagos, it got in touch with the party Chukwu had demanding the N100, 000 balance from.
They headed to SCID. At SCID, they saw one of Chukwu boys and called him to meet them at one of the joints at SCID. When the guy arrived, they handed over the marked notes to him.
As he was about to count the money, other members of the monitoring, came out from their hidden points to surround him.
The SP, who led the team, now coached Chukwu’s man on what to say once they reached the office and presence of Chukwu.
Some of the land speculators and monitoring team men went with Chukwu’s man.
Immediately entered Chukwu’s office, his man told him that the land speculator had absolutely refused to bring the N100, 000 balance.
Blinded with rage, Chukwu had opened his drawer, brought out N400, 000 and flung at some of the land speculators, yelling at them that he would make them all go to jail and rot there.
A police source said: “He didn’t even bother to find out first the strange faces that came with the land speculators. The SP now introduced himself, adding that he was from the IG. The OC legal was arrested and taken to OC X-squad Alagbon, madam Ngozi. She’s an ACP. He was detained there for three days and would be transferred today (yesterday) to Force Head quarters Abuja. The IG has also called for the nominal role, which is list of names of every policeman working at the SCID. Only God knows what he wants to do!”
It was gathered that just some weeks back before his arrest by the IG, the Deputy Commissioner of Police, in charge of SCID, had issued Chukwu a query on allegations of corruption and extortion.
The Force Public Relations Officer, Mr. Frank Mba, said he was not yet aware of the incident. While Lagos State Police Command Spokesperson, Ngozi Braide, said she could not get across to the DCP in charge of SCID.
According to her, the man’s phone was ringing, but he was not picking.
