Police, water vendors clash in Zaria

THERE was commotion in the ancient city of Zaria, Kaduna State on Saturday  as a peaceful  protest embarked upon by water vendors operating in the city against  a hike in revenue by the Local Government Council, turned violent when the  Police used tear-gas to disperse  them.

Representative of the vendors, Malam Idi Lawalli told journalists that they staged a peaceful  protest  against the decision of the council to increase water vendor’s revenue from N20 to N50 per day, but the police suddenly emerged dispersing them with tear gas.

“We were paying N20 per day as revenue to the local government but it suddenly increased it to N50 and the we also buy the water, we also pay N50 for every truck that supplied the water, so we felt the hike in revenue was not justified, ” he said.

He said  the decision taken by the local authorities  would not augur well  for the people especially now that water was very scarce  in Zaria.

He called on  the local government to rescind its decision so that  peace would prevail in the area in the interest of the common man.
