Polytechnic lecturer murdered during cult clash in Kogi

SUSPECTED cultists at the Kogi State Polytechnic in Lokoja,  stabbed a lecturer to death on Friday during a supremacy battle  between two warring groups.
The senior lecturer in the department of Enterpreneur and Research, identified as  Mr. Anthony Abimaje, was said  to have been stabbed in the lower part of the abdomen.
The lecturer was said to have always  taken a  hard stance on examination malpractices in the Polytechnic.
An eyewitness said the lecturer came into the campus around 10.00 p.m. to pick his wife, a petty trader who also owned a  shop on the campus that day, when one of the cult members suddenly pounced on him and stabed him.
Another account, however, said the lecturer came to the scene of the riot as a peace maker between two rival groups  when he was stabbed in the stomach by one of the students.
The lecturer was  said to have died on his way to the hospital.
It would be recalled that a forthnight ago, a lecturer was stripped naked after he was beaten by a female student and her boyfriend for refusing to ‘cooperate’ during examination period.
In  the past, the institution had been closed down by the state government  over ethnic  and cult-related issues.
The Polytechnic Public Relations Officer, Mr. TIjani Yakubu, described the incident as unfortunate. He added that the institution had been shut down by the authority.
According to him, investigations had commenced into the incident.
“We will ensure that those involved in the act face the full weight of the law.”
On a  visit to  the campus on Saturday, policemen had taken over the main entrance of the institution, while some students were seen packing their belongings out of the campus.
