THE Kogi State police command has foiled an attempt by a brother to
kidnap his elder sister for a ransom, over alleged failure to offer him
financial assistance.
Ahmed Momoh, 35, a native of Auchi in Edo
State, with two others, had planned to kidnap her sister and demand for a
ransom of N500,000.
Momoh, who gave the name of the sister as
Pamela Okorie, said though she was rich, she always turned him down
anytime he demanded for financial assistance.
He disclosed that
the best way to get money from his sister was to kidnap her and demand a
ransom, as, he said, he planned to teach his sister “a lesson.”
Momoh,
while he was paraded at the police command headquarters, told newsmen
that “anytime I ask for any assistance from my sister, she would not
give me, in spite of her wealth. I discussed it with my two other
friends and decided to go and kidnap her anytime she comes from Lagos.
“I
collected N30,000 from my account in the bank for the purpose of
procuring ammunition for the kidnap, as I wanted to teach her a lesson
and I would have killed her if she refused to pay the ransom.”
While
parading the suspects before newsmen on Tuesday, the state Commissioner
of Police, Hillary Opara, said Momoh was a notorious kidnapper based
in Port Hacourt, Rivers State.
He said on July 17, Momoh had
trailed her sister to Auchi, because he learnt that she was coming home
for the weekend, adding that “on getting home, he met one Desmond (now
at large) and gave him N30,000 to procure some fire arms for the
operation, after recruiting one Tijani Saliu of Ekperi-Auchi in Edo
State.
“They discovered that the procured firearm had to be
serviced and they needed more ammunition for the operation to succeed,
so they proceeded to Okene, Kogi State, to a friend who had promised to
assist before they were intercepted by crack detectives at the
Ozuri-Obangede-Ogaminana road.”
Items recovered from them,
according to the police boss, included a Nissan Sunny with registration
number AL 370 HAD, one locally made pistol, two live ammunition and one
locally made catridge pistol.
Also paraded were 15 robbery
suspects and five others, who were caught selling Indian hemps at
Crusher, a suburb of Lokoja, the state capital.
