Police, Navy investigate attack on prisons’ officer

Police, Navy investigate attack on prisons’ officerA prison warder, attached to the Kirikiri Maximum prisons has alleged that over 15 Naval Ratings pounced on him at  Kirikiri town, Lagos State, beating him black and blue for a crime he cannot figure out.
The victim, Anthony Anyia was later confined to a hospital bed, while the Nigerian Navy has commenced investigation into the matter. According to a reliable source, the suspected Ratings had been arrested by the Navy hierarchy.
Two of the suspected Ratings, identified as Barminas and Isiaka had also been detained at the Kirikiri Police Station. Anyia’s journey to hospital started after he went to Berger area to buy some items. He was returning to the prison barrack where he resides when he ran into one of the naval boys.
It was gathered that Anyia was on a motorcycle, when the rating who was allegedly extorting money from commercial bike riders and motorists, suddenly hit his back as motorbike which he was on, rode past.
This happened moment after the motorbike rider, carrying Anyia refused to stop even after the naval rating ordered him to stop and hand over some money.
Anyia was surprise by the attack on him and ordered the motorbike rider to halt.  He wanted to find out from the naval rating why the guy hit him. He however got more than he bargained for.
The Rating allegedly attacked him and later alerted 15 other of his colleagues, who descended on Anyia.
They allegedly flogged him with horse whip and attacked with knives. And as soon as Anyia found a leeway to escape, he took it and bolted like the hounds of hell were after him.
Daily Newswatch gathered that there would have been clash on that fateful day between Naval Ratings and officers of prisons, but for the quick intervention of senior officers from both sides.
Commercial bike riders claimed that many of the naval ratings used to come to kirikiri-Berger road to extort money from motorists. According to them, any motorist who refused to part with some money is usually beaten with their weapons. The motorbike rider would further be ordered not to take that route again.
It would be recalled, that early this year, naval personnel attacked students of Federal College of Fisheries and Marine Technology, Lagos State.
The naval men assaulted the students and shot sporadically until three students were feared dead and 30 others injured. The incident happened during a disagreement between one Ajose Olalekan, a student of the school and two unnamed naval officers attached to the dock yard on Ahmadu Bello Way.
Recounting what transpired, NANS chairman Yaqup Eleto claimed that a naval officer slapped the student and in the course of protecting himself, other students came to his rescue.
The naval men mobilized with guns and shot three students.  Eleto further alleged that the shooting continued uninterrupted until 2 am, the following day.  According to him, the brutalized students were taken to hospital for treatment and no official statement was received from the Dock yard over that incident.
