Suspected robber wants to witness his babies’ birthJuliana Francis
An armed robber, who is desperate to secure his release from the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), Ikeja, Lagos State because he wanted to witness the birth of his two babies from two lovers, had promised to assist police eradicate robbery in Mushin area of the metropolis, if he was allowed to go.
The suspect, Abdulrasaq Ogunmuyiwa, while in detention, worried about his two lovers, telling police that he impregnated two women and that one was almost due. He wondered how they would cope without him.
According to him, his greatest regret was that he might never see his new babies.
He told police that if they allowed him to go, he would assist them to eradicate armed robbery from Mushin, adding that he knew all the robbery gangs at Mushin.
Singing like a bird after his arrest, Ogunmuyiwa told how he and some gang members attacked a stationery Rapid Response Squad (RRS) van at the Idimu area of Egbeda, killing the police driver and an inspector.
They had also made away with the slain inspector’s rifle.
Ogunmuyiwa, who resides at the Mushin area of Lagos State, was said to have been terrorising Iyana-Ipaja area of the metropolis before his arrest.
According to the police, because Ogunmuyiwa lives at the Mushin area, with his family house there, he had always deliberately kept away from carrying out any robbery attack at that axis.
Rather, he goes to areas around Iyana-Ipaja and its environs to operate.
After his arrest, Ogunmuyiwa told police that he had taken part in robberies around the Idimu area of Egbeda.
According to him, while carrying out the robbery at Idimu, he and his gang members attacked a stationary Rapid Response Squad (RRS) vehicle on April 2013, killing the police driver of the van and an inspector, while other policemen bolted.
He revealed that as soon as they realised the policemen had ran away, the gang stepped down from their vehicle and collected the slain inspector’s rifle.
Ogunmuyiwa said that he had another robbery gang at Ojo cantonment area, adding that the Ojo gang was led by one Seyi.
About a month ago, however, police burst Seyi’s gang, killing four of the members, including Seyi. The suspect said that the fateful encounter with policemen, which eventually led to the gang meeting its waterloo, was the battle of all battles. Ogunmuyiwa said that he was surprised that he escaped with his life.
The leader of the gang, Seyi, was killed in the attack, while Ogunmuyiwa sustained bullet wounds.
Slowed down by the bullet wounds, Ogunmuyiwa had frantically struggled to reach his family home at Mushin.
He said that even as he was running for his life, heading to Mushin, policemen were still on his trail.
He said he had had to shake off the police tail by scaling a fence, from where he made his way to a friend’s house.
The friend, identified as Munisi, is also a robber.
Ogunmuyiwa narrated that while he was nursing his bullet wounds in Musini’s home that night, temptation came calling his way.
It was late at night, when Musini suddenly came in with a friend. Musini told him that he and his friend were going on operation that night. The robbery operation would take place at Mile 2 axis.
Rather than stay at home and continue nursing his wounds, Ogunmuyiwa had decided to join the bandwagon because he did not want to miss out on the loot.
They left that night and robbed Fagbem’s Filling Station. The robbery operation however turned out to be a huge disappointment. While they were expecting millions after they attack on the filling station, they carted away only N67, 000.
A police source said: “Ogunmuyiwa was very angry with Munisi, blaming him for the poor robbery operation. He said he couldn’t afford to get killed just because of only N67, 000.  Just as they alighted from a bus at Command area of Ipaja, members of the Oodua Peoples’ Congress (OPC) stopped Munisi. As Munisi attempted to run, the OPC men chased and arrested him. The OPC men recovered a locally made gun from Munisi. He was beaten and inflicted with machete cuts.”
Policemen from Ipaja Police Station were alerted and went to the scene to arrest both men. It was gathered that both men had already confessed to the crime.
