THE Bauchi State government on Thursday arraigned a woman, Azumi
Abubakar and her son, Yakubu Musa, now at large before a Bauchi State
High Court for allegedly stabbing a lady, Aisha Yunusa, with knife and
subsequently burnt her to death.
State counsel, Garba Abdullahi
from the Bauchi State Ministry of Justice filed a two-count charge of
criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide punishable with death against
Azumi Abubakar and her son who is now at large, both of Tani Yola
village in Bauchi Local Government Area of the state, saying that the
crime was contrary to Sections 96,97 and 221 of the Penal Code Laws.
The
state counsel informed the court that on January 19, 2013, one Sale
Gardama of Tani Yola Village reported to Toro Divisional Police Station
that Azumi Abubakar and her son, Yakubu Musa, now at large, criminally
conspired and killed his daughter, Aisha Yunusa, burnt her and abandoned
the corpse in the farm of one Abubakar, alias Mai Harawa.
According to Gardama, the accussed stabbed the deceased with a knife near her nose and burnt her to death.
Meanwhile,
when the case was mentioned, the accussed told the court, presided over
by Justice Aliyu Baba Usman, that she had no lawyer to defend her as
she had no money to engage the services of one.
This development
prompted Barrister Idris Jibo, who was in the court as of the time her
case was mentioned to volunteer to serve as her counsel under the
Community Rescue Initiative, a non-governmental organisation. He
subsequently pleaded with the court to adjourn the case to enable him to
meet with his client before she was arraigned.
This, the
presiding judge agreed with and, therefore, adjourned the case till
December 16, 2013 for proper arraignment and ordered the accused to be
remanded in prison custody.
