One of the farm workers at Igbodu-Isiwo, Epe, Lagos State, where two
female farmers, a farm worker and six-month-old baby were kidnapped,
yesterday said that some of his colleagues were running back to their
country, Togo.
The man, Mathin, said the farm workers, who are
predominantly Togolese, were leaving Nigeria for Togo because police
were arresting them.
He said: “We cannot come out to work. Some of our colleagues have
even run back to Togo for fear of being arrested by policemen who are
hunting for the kidnappers. We only came to Nigeria to work, so that we
can feed our family members. We are not safe anymore.”
On Friday morning, gunmen invaded a farm settlement at Epe and
abducted Mrs. Oluwatoyosi Aboderin, her sister’s sixmonth- old baby,
another female farmer, Mrs. Ogechi Maku, and a farm worker identified as
Baba Togo. On Tuesday, the kidnappers asked for N70 million to release
the two farm owners, Baba Togo and the six-month-old baby.
The abductors demanded N50 million to free Aboderin, her sister’s
six-month-old baby and Maku, while they asked for N20 million for Baba
Togo’s freedom. One of the managers of the farms, who refused to
disclose his name, said abduction of the victims and the baby was a
bitter experience. He said: “We have not experienced such incident in
this settlement before.
The kidnappers came through the river. We are surrounded by water.
Marine police should be deployed to coastal communities for protection.
We are not safe anymore. “In order to secure farm workers, we have
contracted local vigilantes for protection.”
A resident in the community said: “Some of the workers in the farm
settlement used to come to our community to buy foodstuff and some other
needs. Since the incident, they have stayed away. Everyone is afraid.”https://newtelegraphonline.com/epe-farm-workers-return-togo/
