The Lagos State Police Command has arrested eight men for allegedly stealing Lagos State Government property.
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Edgal
Imohimi, said that the arrest wouldn’t have been possible, but for community
policing.
According to Imohimi, members of the community
informed operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RSS) of the activities of the
vandals, leading to their arrest.
Imohimi said: “Whenever these cables are stolen, street
light would go off. But with the help of the RRS, the entire gang has been
arrested. The suspects stole rolls of aluminum cables. We recovered cables, two
hammers and a vehicle from them.”
The suspects are; Sunday Joseph 37, John Chinedu,32,
Henry omwonwa 30, Frances Fidelis 22, Daniel Akpan 29, Sunday Frances 42, Amos
Eze 57 and Obinna Inabu 38.
One of the suspects, Eze, a trader at Alaba International
Market, Ojo, said the person who brought the cables to him, never told him they
were stolen items.
Eze said: “The sellers told me that they bought the
cables from a manufacturing company. I have been dealing in cables since 2001
and had never been arrested.
Another suspect, Joseph, a taxi man, denied knowing
anything about the crime. According to him, he was hired to carry some goods,
when he got to where he was supposed to pick the goods, he was arrested.
Fidelis, who happens to be Joseph’s friend said:
“I’m innocent of this crime. I was with my friend Joseph when he got a call to
come and carry some goods. Joseph even borrowed money from me to buy fuel for
his car. He promised to drop along the way after he picked the goods. I
followed him; that was how I was arrested.”
