Police smash notorious kidnap, robbery gang



The Taraba State Police Command, at the weekend, smashed a dreaded kidnapping and robbery gang, known as ‘Ghana Gang.’


According to the Taraba State Commissioner of Police, Mr David Ajibola Akinremi, the gang has been terrorizing Taraba, Adamawa and Benue state.

The notorious leader of the gang, Tekinbi Daniel aka Mopol was arrested. Daniel was arrested, along with 15 other suspects for various crimes.

Akinremi also disclosed that two men, who early this week attacked a correspondent with The SUN newspapers, Mr Sylvester Vishima, were arrested.
 
Akinremi said: “The suspects were arrested on intelligence gathering by detectives from the anti - kidnapping unit. Our detectives stormed a suspected hide- out in Jalingo, the state capital detectives and nabbed  Tekinbi Daniel a.k.a Mopol. He is the chief strategist of the ' Ghana' gang that operated from Benue State before relocating to Taraba State. Mopol had earlier embraced the Benue State Government Amnesty programme, but went back to his ignoble trade of kidnapping and robbery.”

Akinremi said that two suspects who attacked the SUN Newspaper correspondent had earlier attacked Linda Habila and Aliyu Yusuf on FGGC area in Jalingo, before they later attacked the journalist. Akinremi said that the two suspects have confessed to the crime.

Also arrested are six suspected kidnappers, who threatened to kill two persons in the state, if they refused to part with N2million each in two separate incidents in the state. The police gave the victims’ name as Ferdinand Ifesinachi and Aliyu Yusuf.

Akinremi said: “We also arrested six armed robbers with their arms and ammunition. We recovered a locally made AK47 rifle, single barrel, revolver pistol, two pellets, three handsets and assorted charms from. We received a marching order by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr Ibrahim K. Idris. I want to sound a warning to criminals in the state to relocate."
