Human trafficking: Commissioner of women Affairs cautions parents

Plateau State Commissioner of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Mrs. Rufina Gurumyen, has urged parents to be conscious of human traffickers who would want to export girl-child overseas for prostitution.

Gurumyen stated this yesterday in Jos, while receiving Gloria Elisha and her child, Emmanuel Ikechukwu from the Acting Director of State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) Bintan Wuyep after they were evacuated from Libya to Nigeria.

Gurumyen said: "Most Nigerians who travel to Libya in search of greener pastures did not find things easier over there. Some lost their lives, while a good number had their legs amputated. Some ladies were forced to join prostitution to enable them survive. I want to caution parents in the state to be aware of human trafficking in the country. Parents should not give out their children to anybody. Your child might be forced into prostitution. Children nursing ambition of leaving Nigeria for overseas should learn from the pathetic story of Gloria."

Gurumyen pledged the commitment of the rescue administration of Governor Simon Lalong to establish a business for the returnee to enable her and her child to settle down.

Gurumyen directed the Ministry to take the lady to the hospital with her child to ascertain her fitness before reunion her with her parents in Kanam Local Government Area of the State.

The Acting Director of State Emergency Management Agency, Mrs. Bintan Wuyep said they would do everything within their jurisdiction to assist the vulnerable persons in the state. She urged youths to believe in the prosperity of Nigeria rather than travelling abroad to be subject into unending agony.

North Central Coordinator of National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Slallu Lugard Bijimi, who brought Gloria Elisha from Abuja to Plateau lamented on the pathetic story of Nigerians who travel illegally to Libya.

Bijimi noted: "Most Nigerians in Libya are not doing any tangible job, other than prostitution and immoral jobs. Some of them are dead while others are amputated because of brutality. Nigerian youths should learn from the pathetic stories of the returnees and believe in the economic development of Nigeria."
