Arts, literature can end Boko Haram —University dons

SOME university dons have noted that through the re-introduction of literature and other languages, there would be an end to the Boko Haram insurgence and other violent crimes in the country.
Speaking during the first International Conference organised by the Department of English, Anambra State University, Igbariam Campus, various speakers, mainly Professors of English language and Literature, said that arts and literature should be channeled towards ending various hostilities in various parts of the country.
In their separate contributions, the Vice Chancellor of Anambra State University, Prof. Fidelis Okafor and Professor of English, Akachi Ezeigbo, held that if language was given more attention in various institutions of higher learning, it would help to re-shape the society, since language is a thing of the mind.
The Head of the Department of English Language in the university, Dr. (Mrs.) Ngozi Chuma Udeh said that the essence of organising the international conference was to seek solution to the Boko Haram insurgence through literature.
“The promptings to choose a topic have been moulded by the topical rumblings of the uncertainties of life in the country. In the face of the Boko Haram bombings, the constant boom armed robbers’ machine guns, proliferation of kidnapping business, increasing climatic changes and harsh realities of mass deaths and jungle justice.
This intellectual gathering becomes a natural call for the intellectuals to brain-storm and proffer solutions plausible enough for the correction of the nation’s maladies,” she said.
