Wada |
GOVERNOR Idris Wada of Kogi State was on Friday critically
injured in a ghastly auto accident.
His Aide de Camp (ADC), ASP Idris Mohammed, died on the spot.
Wada, was initially taken to State Specialist Hospital, Lokoja, from where he was transferred to an orthopaedic hospital in Abuja. He was returning to Lokoja, the state capital, after declaring open the annual Igala Education Summit at Ayingba, in Dekina Local Government Area of the state.
The accident occurred at about 2.10 p.m. at Elete Emiworo village, in Ajaokuta Local Government Area of the state.
An eyewitness, who pleaded not to be named, said the rear tyre of the governor’s Lexus Jeep burst on top speed and the vehicle somersaulted several times.
The unconscious governor was immediately rushed to the State Specialist Hospital, where he was stabilised before being moved to Abuja, for further medical attention. His ADC was brought out of the vehicle dead while the driver sustained injuries.
Wada, at around 4.00p.m. on Friday, left the State Specialist Hospital where he was rushed to with other victims in an ambulance with registration number KGGH 33, to an air strip at Obajana, from where he was flown to Abuja at 5.30p.m.
An online medium, PREMIUM TIMES quoted doctors at the Lokoja Specialist Hospital where Mr Wada received first aid treatment as saying that one of his legs was “totally broken.”
The doctors said the governor was brought into the intensive care unit with a severely fractured femur, a senior government official said. He added that the doctors said the governor is in good condition and did not sustain major head or spinal cord injuries.
“There is hope,” he said.
The state government arranged for a helicopter which flew the governor to the National Hospital in Abuja, a source at the government house told PREMIUM TIMES.
The governor is in “serious pains,” the aide, who saw the governor at the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital, said.
The Commissioner for Information, Yabagi Bologi, confirmed the incident, adding that the governor was in stable condition.
A statement by the state government reads: “The convoy of the Governor of Kogi State, Capt. Idris Ichalla Wada, has been involved in a ghastly accident. The governor survived the road mishap and is in stable condition.
“Sadly, however, the (his) Aide de Camp, Idris Mohammed, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, died on the spot.”
The release stated further that “the accident occurred Friday afternoon at Emi Woro Village, about 12 kilometres into the state capital, in between Prime Polytechnic and Salem University, in Ajaokuta Local Government.
“The convoy was returning from an annual Igala Education Summit, which the governor declared opened at the state university in Anyigba.”
There was an initial confusion as to the hospital where he was taken to in Abuja.
Indeed, as at 7.35 p.m. on Friday after journalists laid siege to the National Hospital for over four hours, the governor was nowhere to be found at the hospital.
Last night however, it was gathered that he was on admission at a private orthopaedic hospital in Garki II, Abuja, where he was operated on around 8.00 p.m.
The Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr Richard Elesho who confirmed that Wada was alive, hale and hearty, refused to disclose exactly where the governor was.
He said: “I am very happy to announce to you that the governor is not dead. He is not dead at all. I don’t want to tell you where he is. The governor is in a very stable and healthy condition.”
“It is unfortunate that we lost the ADC in the auto crash. I have also heard people saying the driver died. No, it is not true. There are just 3 people in the car, the governor, the ADC and the driver.
“The ADC died on the spot but the Governor and driver are in a stable condition. Why do you want me to tell you where he is?
“If I am bold enough as a colleague to let you know that we lost the ADC, why do I have to lie to you?
“The governor is alive, hale and hearty but I don’t have to disclose the exact location of the governor to you; must I? I only have to tell you as a colleague that the Governor is alive.
“He had a first aid treatment at the Specialist Hospital, Lokoja. After we left the Specialist Hospital, we left for Government House. But I don’t have to tell you his exact location at the moment.
Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has directed its members nationwide to observe minutes of prayers today (Saturday) for the speedy recovery of the governor.
A statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, said the party was shocked by the news of the accident.
“Our great party is yet to recover from a rude shock arising from a recent similar incident. We, therefore wish to direct all our members to observe compulsory minutes of prayers for the speedy recovery of the governor and to spare the party from further painful incidents,” the statement said.
The PDP also prayed for the repose of the soul of the ADC to the governor.
