Minister, immigration boss differ on recruitment scam

Uzoma

THERE is cold war brewing between the Minister of Interior, Comrade Abba Moro and the Comptroller-General of Immigration, Mrs Rose Uzoma, over alleged controversial recruitment in the Nigeria Immigration Service.
This followed the embargo placed on the purported recruitment in the service.
Uzoma, in replying the minister, said he could cancel the recruitment exercise if it had commenced.
The Immigration boss spoke on Thursday at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, during an on-the-spot check.
She denied any recruitment in NIS as being rumoured, adding that the purported exercise would soon begin but no single appointment letter had been issued to anybody.
She said: “I want to put it on record that the Nigeria Immigration Service has not recruited anybody recently. The purported exercise is just about to begin, no single letter of appointment has been issued to any Nigerian, so it is real fabrication that we have been busy recruiting people from specific area of the country. We are still working out the modalities and procedures. We only got the approval to recruit two weeks ago, so how could I have been recruiting for months?
“It is really true that we have been making effort to recruit more hands, because we actually need these officers especially for our land borders. We don’t have enough staff to mount these areas, so we have been asking government to give us more hands, and luckily the Head of Service just granted our request to recruit and do even replacement this time around.”
The Minister of Interior, had through his Special Assistant on Media, George Udoh, issued a statement on Tuesday, canceling the controversial recruitment said to have been going on in the NIS.
