Ex-students arrested over car-snatching

THREE rusticated students of Federal University of Agricultural , Abeokuta (FUNAAB) and a computer graphic designer were among those paraded by the Ogun State Police Command on Wednesday, December 19, as they were alleged to have been members of a car-snatching gang who had been terrorising Ibadan city but residing in Abeokuta..
Speaking during a press briefing on the achievements of his command in the area of crime reduction, the Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Mr Okoye Ikemefuna, told journalists that two of the suspects were arrested on Friday,  December 7 by a team of anti-robbery detectives attached to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Eleweran.
According to the commissioner, the detectives acted onw a tip-off and arrested the two suspects at Camp area, Abeokuta with a Honda Accord car with registration number FKJ 923AU. He added that the suspects, during interrogation, confessed to belonging to a robbery syndicate, and revealed the names of two other members.
Another Toyota Camry car with registration number AS 108 BDJ and a toy gun were also recovered, Mr Okoye said. He gave the names of the suspects as Akinwole Funsho (22), Samuel Fagbenle (22), Tomiwa Bajo (23) and Akinfenwa Muritala (24).
In an interview with Crime Reports, one of the suspects, Funsho, who said he hailed from Ibadan in Oyo State but whose parents are based in Abuja, admitted committing the crime he was alleged to have said that he didn’t know what else to do after his rustication.
According to Funsho, “my father is a trader while my mother teaches. I was a student of FUNAAB studying Environmental Management before I was rusticated few months ago for misconduct. I was in 500 level then.
“I started a robbery gang around September when I didn’t know what else to do. I and two of my colleagues who were also rusticated and another guy came together and thought of what we could do. We decided to be snatching cars and went to buy a toy gun.
“Our modus operandi was to enter a cab and move round the city until we stumble on anyone who parked his car. We would approach the person and point the toy gun at him. We would then take the car from him. We have snatched four cars that way and all the operations were carried out in Ibadan. What became our undoing was that we did not have a buyer.
“One of the cars was siezed from us by Customs men who said its duties were not paid. We gave another one to our friend, Adams, who lives at Abule Egba, Lagos State, to dispose of, but he went away with it. The two remaining cars have been taken from us by the police.” Funsho also revealed that he is the only son of his parents, with three sisters.
In his own confession, Muritala said he met Funsho at Sapon when he came to his shop to do some computer work. “I joined others when I left Sapon when I didn’t have anything to do. We went to Ibadan together to do the car-snatching.”
Fagbenle also admitted that he was a final year student of FUNAAB studying Health Science and Management when he was rusticated due to poor academic performance.  When asked why he decided to start robbery, Fagbenle said he believed he needed to survive and felt that robbery would fill the gap.
The fourth suspect, Ijebu-born Tomiwa Bajo also said he had no reason for joining a robbery, as he continued to say ‘nothing’ to most of the questions he was asked. He said he was also rusticated because of poor academic performance. He however said that his arrest was the consequence of his sins and when asked whether he was ready to change for the better, he answered that he had already changed.
