GENERAL Officer Commanding (GOC) the 82 Division of the
Nigerian Army, Enugu, Major-General Olayinka Oshinowo, has urged Anambra people
to volunteer information on criminals and crime syndicates.
Oshinowo made the appeal during the 2012 West African Social Activities (WASA) of the Nigerian Army held in Onitsha Military Cantonment, last Friday.
The GOC who was represented by Commander, 34 Artillery Brigade, Obinze near Owerri, Brig-Gen. M.A. Alkali, said that the army would treat the information given with utmost confidentiality.
“All people in Anambra State should co-operate and give information to the security forces. The security forces are co-operating with one another, it appears there’s a synergy for each information shared and intelligence.
“And once this information is gotten, the army is ready to cover the person who brings that information.
“Feel free, bring that information, you would be protected and the army would use that information to deal with any situation,” he said.
On the to Christmas celebration, he told the people: “Just do your celebration, do your ceremony free, the army is ready to provide adequate security for everybody.”
On WASA, the GOC said that the yearly occasion is meant to serve as a forum for the army and members of the public to interact as well as for the army to take stock of their activities within the year.
He added that given the contemporary security challenges across country and based on the current transformation agenda of the federal government, the Nigerian Army is priming itself to meet the nation's challenges.
“We take our stock, review it, and see where we would improve; particularly with these particularly security challenges in the country,” he said
Earlier, the Commander, Military Cantonment, Onitsha, Col. Taritimiye Gagariga, lauded the continued support of Gov. Peter Obi of Anambra State and the people of the state to the army in it's discharge of its duties.
“A lot of successes have been recorded by the 2 units. They include a satisfactory performance in ensuring peace and security in Anambra State and its environs.
“Some of these successes have been made possible through your (Obi and Anambra people's) support such as the cordial civil-military relations existing in Anambra State, the sense of co-operation and support from the para-military and other security agencies,’’ Gagariga said.
