Tension in Ogun as Amosun suspends LG boss, councillors

Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State yesterday suspended the Chairman, Ijebu East Local Government Area, Dare Ogunde, his deputy, Mojisola Sangosanya, as well as all councillors and political appointees of the council.
He also set up a panel of inquiry to investigate the affairs of the local government and submit its reports within 14 days.

The suspension of both executive and legislative arms of the local government is for a period of 90 days "in the first instance."

A statement by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mr. Taiwo Adeoluwa, said the decision was in exercise of the governor's powers under Sections 39 and 43 of the Ogun State Local Government Law.

The development consequently generated tension and anxiety in the council as career workers gathered in groups to discuss the sudden suspension.

Adeoluwa said during the period of suspension, the Head of the Local Government Administration (HOLGA) will administer the council, pending further directives and the outcome of the inquiry ordered by the governor.

He added that the suspended chairman, vice chairman, 11 councillors and other political appointees have been directed to stay away from the council premises.

The SSG stated that the panel include Chief Wole Adesiji (Chairman), Barrister James Kolawole Omotosho of the state Ministry of Justice (Secretary) while Mrs Ayoola Afolabi and Mr Bayo Adeyemi are members.

Though the Amosun-led administration did not categorically state any reason for the suspension, the Nigerian Compass reliably gathered that it was not unconnected with certain political undercurrents in the council.

It was learnt that the unfolding crisis in the council led to the removal of the Leader of the Legislative Arm, Kehinde Quadri, last Friday, by other councillors.

Speaking with the Nigerian Compass, a chieftain of the ruling Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Prince Tokan Odukoya, said there was crisis of confidence among top functionaries of the local government.

Odukoya alleged that the councillors believed their Leader was not representing their interests in the scheme of things. "So, they removed him and the whole situation became rowdy," he added.
