Operatives attached to the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim
Idris’s, Special Intelligence Response Squad (IRT), have arrested some
suspects behind the hijacking of 600 bags of rice valued at N6million.
The suspects, were arrested after Idris, ordered the IRT operatives,
led by a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), Mr. Abba Kyari, to track
those behind series of hijacking in Abuja.
The IGP was said to have become alerted on the increasing cases of
diversion of goods after one Yahya Umar Santa, wrote a petition to the
Federal Capital Territory State Criminal Investigations
Department(SCID), complaining that a transporter disappeared with his
600 bags of rice. The petitioner said the stolen rice was worth N6m.
When the SCID was not making headway with the investigation, Idris instructed IRT to look into the matter.
A police source said: “The efforts by the FCT Command was not
yielding result, hence IRT operatives were deployed by the IGP. On
August 4, 2016, one Mallam Sani Mohammed Usman, 45, who received the
truck was arrested in Kano. Immediate follow up led to the arrest of one
Nasiru Mohammed, 28, Ibrahim Mohammed, 42, Yahaya Shuaibu, 38 and
Alaramma Nura Idris, 37.
The major buyer, Abubakar Ishaku Gwagwalada was also arrested.
Gwagwalada bought 400 bags at N7, 000 per bag. They were all arrested in
Kaduna, Niger and Abuja respectively.”
The suspects are said to be assisting IRT operatives to catching
other fleeing members of the gang. The police are also making efforts to
recover the bags of rice.
