SARS men get N500,000 for illegal demolition, face trial

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Fatai Owoseni, has ordered the immediate arrest and orderly room trial of four policemen attached to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), over illegal duty.
The four policemen; one inspector, three sergeants, were arrested after they carried out the demolition of a building located in Ikeja area of the metropolis without court order.
It was gathered that when Owoseni was briefed on the issue, he immediately ordered the arrest of the men and immediate orderly room trial. The policemen were further discovered to have abandoned their duty post at Badagry area of the state, to head to Ikeja, where they carried out the illegal demolition.
The SARS men were alleged to have been lured out of their duty post by one Alhaji, who paid them N500, 000 to embark on the illegal duty. The Alhaji was said to been having a running battle with the owner of the building. Before the policemen got to the scene, the Alhaji had already hired a bulldozer.
Without much ado, the policemen started supervising the demolition of the building. The owner of the building alerted Ikeja Police Station about the ongoingdemolition.
The Divisional Police Officer (DPO), in charge of Ikeja Police Station, raced to the scene with some policemen. When they reached, they discovered that the people behind the demolition were policemen attached to SARS Ikeja.
When the DPO asked them to present court order, instructing them to carry out the demolition, they couldn’t. The DPO arrested and took them to Owoseni’s office.
A police source said: “The policemen carried out the illegal demolition without court permit or Commissioner of Police permission. One Alhaji paid them N500, 000 to carry out the demolition. The Alhaji rented a bulldozer, gave it to them and they started demolition.
The Alhaji told them that someone trespassed on his land. “It was also discovered that the Officer in Charge of SARS (OC), who happened to be their boss, was not aware of the demolition. The CP ordered that they should be arrested.” The source said: “They left their duty post and moved to Ikeja. Aside from that, it’s not SARS job to carry out demolition. It’s the job of police task force.”
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Dolapo Badmus, who confirmed the incident, said: “They went for illegal duty at Ikeja, to demolish a property. Information got to the CP, who ordered their arrest. They are currently undergoing disciplinary procedure.”https://newtelegraphonline.com/sars-men-get-n500000-illegal-demolition-face-trial/
