The Economic and Financial Crimes
Commission, EFCC, in partnership with Project PINK BLUE and corps members
serving in the Commission on Wednesday, April 26 2017 organised cancer
awareness and free screening for staff at the Commission’s Head Office, Abuja.
Project PINK BLUE is a non-profit
organisation engaged in cancer awareness, provision of free cancer screenings
and fund raising for cancer patients.
The programme which featured
presentations on breast, prostate and cervical cancer by oncologists and
medical experts afforded the staff of the agency the opportunity to receive
free breast and cervical cancer screening.
Runcie C. W. Chidebe, Executive
Director, Project PINK BLUE, described cancer as a huge public health burden
for Nigerians just as corruption had become a cankerworm and an impediment to the
progress of the country.
He acknowledged the serious nature
of the work of the Commission saying, “every day, EFCC staff work day and night
in their commitment to end corruption in Nigeria and strengthen accountability”.
According to him, “there is a need
to ensure that the people leading the fight against corruption are healthy,
aware of cancer, its preventive measures, and encourage early detection of the
disease.
He commended the EFCC for the
partnership and asked the Commission to do more to ensure that people putting
their lives on the line for the country remain healthy while doing their work.
According to the presentation,
cancer has become a critical issue globally, accounting to about seven million
deaths worldwide. In Nigeria, cancer leads to 72,000 deaths per annum and out
of this number, breast cancer is leading followed by liver and prostate cancer.
