Two arrested for targeting women living alone



The Abia State Police Command has arrested two men, who specialized in robbing women who live alone at the Federal Low Cost Housing Estate, Umuahia.

The two men, Obinna Anyanwu and Chinedu Awa, were alleged to have raided and robbed the homes of several women, including Mrs Beatrice Okpi.
They were further alleged to have once carried out robbery operations in the estate for two days.
The police said that the suspects burgled the homes of women they knew to be living alone and carted away their clothing and kitchen utensils.
Luck, however, ran out on the suspects after they raided the home of Uche Jonathan, also residing in that estate and tried to bolt with two wielding machines valued at N46, 000.00.  The man raised the alarm and they were arrested.
The Abia State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Leye Oyebade, said: “These same suspects ransacked the shop of Emeka Aharaumunna,  at the estate and carted away six generating plants valued at N450,000. They also storm the house of Pastor Gabriel Nwankwo, in the same estate and fire gunshots in an attempt to break into the victim’s house to rob.”
Oyebade said that the suspects were arrested following the intervention of the Neighbourhood Watch.
He said that men of the Neighbourhood Watch apprehended and handed the suspects over to the police.
He further said that the suspects had already confessed to carrying out series of robberies at Mrs Okpi’s house in Ohafia, where their ringleader resides.
Items recovered by the police from the suspects include, glass table, Tiger generating plant, two bed mattresses, one TV set, two DVD and among others.
Confessing to the crime, Obinna said that he was initiated by his friend name, Flex.  Obinna added: “I have been involved in robbery operations five times.”
 Chinedu,  Awa alias Pastor, from Ndi Uduma Awoke, Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State, said: “I’m not part of the gang. I only bought some stolen items from them. I didn’t know the items were stolen ones.”
