‘We used belt to strangle driver, steal his car’

The suspects
Three suspects, who connived to kill an Uber driver in Lagos State, yesterday confessed that they did it in order to sell the deceased’s car and raise some money.

The suspects have been identified as Osharon Egberanmuen 31, Michael   Eyeoekpe 27 and one Destiny.
According to the police, Destiny, who is still at large, assisted in the killing of the driver, identified as Neobasa Alex Emmanuel.  The three men dispossessed the deceased of his KIA RIO salon car, marked KTU 594DM.
The suspects were arrested by policemen attached to the Anti-Kidnapping Squad of the Lagos State Police Command.
The suspects confessed to have tailed the Uber driver for days before they eventually cornered and killed him. Immediately they killed him, they dumped his corpse in front of a church at Ogba and started looking for a buyer for the car.
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Fatai Owoseni, presenting the suspects to journalists, said the command received a report that Emmanuel was missing, with his car.
Owoseni said: “Detectives, through sustained efforts two days ago, arrested two suspects in connection with the disappearance of the driver and his car. The suspects, who posed as passengers, strangled the deceased and dumped his remains at Ogba. The car was taken to Delta State, where the suspects were arrested and the car recovered.”
On the fateful day of the murder, the suspects, posing as passengers, boarded the car of Emmanuel at Ikeja.
They told Emmanuel they were going to Oke-Ira, in Ogba. After driving for a while, one of them suddenly asked Emmanuel to make a U-turn and take them to Oremeji Street, Obawole area of Ogba. Emmanuel was killed there.
Recalling the murder, Egberanmuen said: “We’re three that participated in the killing of the driver. I and Michael met at Ogba where I went to drink and became friends. I told how difficult things were for me. I also told him that I needed to relocate to Benin to start all over because things were not moving for me. It was at this point that Michael told me about a deal. He said it would fetch money. He said we could get a car and sell it to his boss.
“Michael then told me about one Alex who has a car. We agreed to meet the following day. Since then, we’ve been meeting to discuss on how to steal the car. On the fateful day, the Uber driver came; I was with Michael in his office. His friend, Destiny was with him. But I didn’t know if he discussed the deal with Destiny.”
Egberanmuen continued: “Around 9:30pm, we called the Uber driver to come and pick us at Tantalizer Eatery at Ogba. I and Destiny were inside the vehicle with the driver, but Michael was outside. I held the belt. Immediately I put the belt across the driver’s neck, Destiny dragged the belt and we strangled him. When we were satisfied that he was dead, we took his corpse to Oremeji Street and dumped him in front of a church. The time by then was around 10:30pm. We made sure nobody saw us.”
According to Egberanmuen, after killing Emmanuel, the suspects took the car to Michael’s boss for sale.
After checking out the car, the man asked them where they got it. They confessed that they killed the owner and stole the car. The man immediately rejected the car and ordered to leave.
Egberanmuen said: “Michael said we should take the car to his house and parked it outside. The idea was to look for buyer in Benin. We were however tracked to Benin by police and arrested.”
