Footballer: I joined robbery to raise money for overseas journey

Some soldiers in Lagos State have arrested three men for robbery and handed them over to the police in Lagos.

The police alleged that the three friends, Godwin Nwoye 25, Mathias Onoyake 22 and John Odikagpule 25, had been terrorising motorists along Alago Meji Yaba area of the metropolis.
The suspects were said to have been arrested in different parts of Lagos.
The police said: “The suspects have been robbing for long.”
Onoyake, who described himself as a footballer, said he was going to his sister’s place when he was arrested and whizzed off to the State Criminal Investigations Department (SCID), Panti.
Onoyake said: “I play football for a club. I needed money for visa and couldn’t raise it. It was because I needed money for visa, that I joined robbery. Most of those that I used to play football with have travelled overseas. I need to travel too.”
Nwoye and Odikagpule, on the other hand, confessed to being motor boys.
They also confessed to robbery. According to them, they embraced robbery because of hunger. They claimed to have been robbing since last year.
They said: “We ventured into robbery after the trailer we used to follow as motor boy developed a fault. We couldn’t work since the trailer wasn’t working. We didn’t have money to feed.”  The suspects said poverty pushed them into crime. They urged Nigerians to forgive them.
