Army trains officers in counter terrorism

THE Army formation in Jaji, near Kaduna, at the weekend, embarked on training of its soldiers and officers, so as to be able to counter any possible terrorist attack in the future.
Newly appointed Acting Commander of Infantry Corps, Major General Osuji, said the exercise, codenamed WAZOBIA KUNAMA, conducted by Tactics wing of Nigerian Army School of Infantry, was for Commanding Officers, Companying Commanders, Young Officers, Senior Infantry Non-Commissioned Officers and Non-Commissioned Officers courses.
He said the courses were designed to expose the officers to the concept of asymmetric warfare in line with the Chief of Army Staff vision.
In a statement signed by Major E. M. Adeniyi of the Army Public Relations Infantry Corps Centre, Nigerian Army, Jaji, Kaduna, the military authorities said the exercise was a blend of conventional warfare and military operations other than war, aimed at combating contemporary security challenges.
Earlier, the Chief Instructor, Colonel Bulama Biu, said the 13 and 14 weeks of the courses had been rigorous, but he expressed gladness that it ended a success.
He disclosed that the entire 260 students registered for the courses successfully graduated, adding that they included 10 students from the Central African Republic.
General Osuji said “you are all witnesses to the recent unfortunate event in the cantonment. There is, therefore, the need to keep a step ahead of would-be dissidents, in order to effectively anticipate and counter their actions.”
The acting commander, therefore, urged the graduating students to be encouraged by the fact that the Nigerian Army was taking necessary steps towards providing appropriate training logistics to its formations, units and personnel.
Major General Osuji, who said he was impressed with their performance throughout the 13 and 14 weeks, urged them not to relent in their efforts toward greater heights in their career.
He added that the course participants would, no doubt, enhance their professional knowledge, saying that it was through them that the Nigerian Army’s constitutional roles would be played.
