Elder citizens protest Ajimobi's non-payment of pensions

OVER the weekend, pensioners of Oyo State-owned agencies and tertiary institutions staged a peaceful protest to further press home their call on Governor Abiola Ajimobi  to pay them the 142 per cent pension arrears already paid to their counterparts who retired from the ministries and departments in core civil service.

Calling on the state governor to correct the imbalance were members from the Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (BCOS), Oyo State Housing Corporation, Sports Council, Emmanuel Alayande College of Education and The Polytechnic, Ibadan.

The elderly citizens displayed placards bearing various inscriptions as the  governor paid a visit to The Polytechnic, Ibadan for the school's 28th Convocation ceremony.

According to the leader of the aggrieved pensioners, Mr Joseph Akintayo, the affected retireers in their fold are about 1,000. and the are being owed about N300 million in total.

The group recalled that the governor positively addressed the problem of 142 per cent pension arrears in the first year of his administration by approving a lump sum of N1.9 billion. Akintayo said they were stunned that "the fall-out of this wonderful and uncommon gesture was the non-inclusion of our own group of pensioners on the disbursement list.

"It is painful for us as retirees of parastatals and tertiary institutions that while our counterpart – core civil service retirees were being paid the arrears since September, 2011, we have not been able to fathom any reason for non-payment to us," the octogenarian said.

According to Akintayo, among his members "are a good number of eminent men and women in our midst, including former General Managers, Rectors, College Provosts, Deans of Faculties, disnguished administrators and notable Directors of various professional backgrounds, who had offered meritorious services to the nation and are pleading for fair play and justice.”

Ajimobi was accompanied to the convocation by the National Publicity of Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Lai Mohammed. The governor, who is  the Visitor to the institution, congratulated the new graduates and urged them to make their impact felt in public and private sectors within and outside Nigeria.
