The
Senate yesterday invoked its powers in section 89 of the 1999 constitution as
amended by issuing warrant of arrest on the Chairman of Pension Task Team, Mr.
Abdulrasheed Maina.
This followed
Maina's refusal to honour repeated invitations extended to him by the Senate
Panel probing pension administration in the country.
The
panel, at its Tuesday sitting, gave the last opportunity for the Chairman to
appear to defend himself but he failed to turn up at the resumed hearing
yesterday.
Maina was
being invited to state his case on the whereabout of N195 billion unspent
pension money that can't be accounted for.
The
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mohammed Abubakar has subsequently been mandated
by the upper chamber to arrest Maina and produce him by 11 am tomorrow.
The
co-Chairman of the Panel, Senator Kabiru Gaya who stated this, said that the
Senate was guided by its rules and the Constitution of Nigeria.
His
Words: "We have the rules, we have the power to ask the Inspector General
of Police to arrest and bring him.
"We
have agreed to request the Inspector General of Police to arrest and produce
him here. We have issued a warrant, it is being signed presently by the
President of the Senate, David Mark.
"The
Clerk will deliver it to the Inspector General of Police who is mandated to
bring him here at 11 am prompt".
