Omuo murder: Ekiti high chief, others remanded in prison
AN Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State High Court, on Tuesday, remanded an Omuo-Ekiti high chief, Chief Dayo Olatunbosun Orojo and two others in prison custody, over their complicity in the murder of Mrs Rebecca Adewumi in Omuo, headquarters of Ekiti East Local Government Area, on May 11, over allegations of witchcraft.
Ruling on the bail application in the resumed hearing in the matter on Tuesday, Justice Oluwatoyin Bodunde rebuffed the plea of the counsel for the defendants, Mr Oladele Adedeji, that the pending bail application be heard, while she ordered that the accused remained in prison custody, pending the time the bail application would be disposed of.
Chief Orojo, the Lisa of Omuo-Ekiti Mrs Adesola Adeyemo and Abey Feranmi are facing a six-count charge of felony, conspiracy to commit murder, unlawful accusation of witchcraft, unlawful participation in trial by ordeal, unlawful depravation and murder.
They were accused of allegedly murdering Mrs Adewumi, saying she allegedly caused the death of her step-son, Mr Ola Adewumi, through a strange illness she afflicted him with witchcraft.
Counsel for the defendants had submitted that the first defendant, Chief Orojo, was hypertensive and had been on medication, adding that his continued incarceration would worsen his health.
But the prosecution counsel, Mr Femi Onipede, said the state government had already filed an objection to the bail application filed by the counsel for the defendants, adding that another application was before the court to grant the prosecution the leave to call its witnesses.
