Traffic law: 10,000 okada riders, activists plan to shutdown Lagos

Human rights activists and operators of commercial motorcycles, popularly known as Okada riders, are set to shutdown social and economic activities in Lagos for a week
Our correspondent learnt that the moves may not be unconnected with the hard-line posture of the Babatunde Fashola-led administration over the hardships unleashed on commercial motorcycle operators due to enforcement of new traffic law, which is considered to be obnoxious by some residents.
Dependable activists told our correspondent at the weekend that in the last couple weeks, some notable human rights activists, such as Dr Dipo Fashina and Comrade Abiodun Aremu, who are the arrow heads, have been holding series of meetings and strategizing on how best to tackle the hardship unleashed on okada riders by the Lagos state government.
The protests, which are expected to begin today, will begin at Yaba bus-stop, where some 10,000 riders, activists and other protesters with march to Lagos State Government secretariat in Alausa, Ikeja.
According tour sources, Ikorodu road and some other major roads leading to the secretariat will be blocked by the protesters, leading to temporary disruptions in social, economic and other activities.
Our correspondent further observed that fliers sensitizing people on the protests were distributed by some activists and Okada riders at major bus-stops in various parts of Lagos at the weekend.
